Abstract
This retrospective study was undertaken to examine causes and rates of death after renal transplants by year. Seventy five persons among the 700 patients who received a living donor renal transplant between 1979 at YUMC had died by July, 1992
with
an
mortality of 11%. Causes of death for this 75 deceased patients were analyzed. Common cause of death was infection, cardio cerbro-vascular disease and liver failure in decreasing order. Mortality rates from an any causes at 1, 2, and 5 years
decreased
significantly from 1979 to 1984, but there was no changes after 1984. The proportion of death by infec tion did not decrease over all periods. Infecton in early, cardio/cerebro-vascular disease in late period was the leading cause of death. In
the
most
patients with cardio/cerebro-vascular disease or liver failure, graft function was still remained, but patients with infection were tend to die with falling allograft. In patients with prior antirejection therapy, infection was the leading cause
of
death. Liver failure in HBsAg(+) recipients, infection in DM patients was the leading cause of death. In conclustion; Even in the era of powerful antibioties, antifungal or antiviral agents, infection is the leading cause of death after renal
transplantation. We have to pay much strict attention to prevention, early diagnosis and proper treatment of infection, and also for the long-term survivors, we have to take care the patients like the high risk groups for the development of
cardio/cerebro-vascular disease with adequate blood pressure control.
